Defending democracy and the rule of law and safeguarding human rights and fundamental freedoms are at the core of the common values of the Council of Europe. The Council of Europe strives not only to develop common rules and standards that form a European legal area based on the principle of the rule of law and human rights, but also has established a system for enforcing these standards. Following the introduction a short synopsis of the monitoring mechanisms including examples of achievements are presented.
