Children’s rights (Istanbul Convention) (2019)
The Council of Europe Convention on Preventing and Combating Violence against Women, (Istanbul Convention, CETS No. 210), has a strong focus on women and girls in as far as they experience gender-based violence, such as stalking, sexual harassment, sexual violence, domestic violence, forced marriage, female genital mutilation (FGM), forced sterilisation and forced
abortion. The Istanbul Convention contains a range of measures to prevent gender-based violence against girls, protect girls against such violence and prosecute the perpetrators. The reason for this focus on women and girls is that they are the ones exposed to the forms of violence covered by the convention and that these are a manifestation of the historically unequal power relations between men and women.
