Advancing biomedicine and improving healthcare through AI: what are the human rights impacts?
The report explores the human rights implications of artificial intelligence systems used in healthcare, with a view to supporting doctors and other healthcare professionals in promoting the agency and autonomy of patients, patient welfare and equitable access to healthcare. Aimed at decision makers, health providers, health professionals and patients (including patient associations), the report focuses on selected human rights principles of particular relevance to the “patient–doctor” relationship, namely consent (Article 5, European Convention on Human Rights and Biomedicine (Oviedo Convention)), professional standards (Article 4, Oviedo Convention), private life and the right to information (Article 10, Oviedo Convention), and equitable access to healthcare (Article 3, Oviedo Convention).
