The Recommendation on equal rights for intersex persons is the first comprehensive international legal instrument dedicated to the human rights of these people. It provides clear guidance to governments in making laws and policies that prohibit non-consensual medical interventions and ensuring that any interventions on intersex children are postponed until they can decide for themselves. It also calls for the provision of equitable access to healthcare and the protection of intersex persons from violence, discrimination and exclusion.
